Located in Geraldton, in the Midwest of Western Australia we demonstrate the practical application of Permaculture and environmental conservation.

We operate as a not-for-profit environmental organisation – The Drylands Foundation.

Fires are a real thing.  Common sense plantings can help contain fires.  These are strategies for the Geraldton area.

With all the fires in Australia lately, I thought this was a good time for this post.
Fences & firebreaks - planning for the future.
How many of you are kicking yourself for planting too close to the fence?
Check out our 3m and 5m Rule.
If you live in the Geraldton area and follow this rule, you'll save yourself heaps of time in the future. Minimal fence repairs, no plant damage to your fence, free access down fence lines, No worries about fire burning the galvanising fence wires and best of all if you live in the country, the ability to get a good shot at a rabbit along the fenceline.

Here is the planting distance from the fenceline rule:
If you don't have a firebreak: 3m
If you do have a firebreak: 5m.

Thanks. What are the best fire retardant trees to plant in Kalbarri? 🙂

Great information.

How many folk plant gum trees in their yard and allow the leaves to drop in the gutters? Or have them overhanging the roof? Gums drop their leaves when under stress, and trees close to the house are a disaster waiting to happen.

Today we are releasing some Local Mallees, Eucalyptus eudesmoides in two litre white bags rather than smaller tubes. We have found these establish faster and easier than tubestock.

Mallee means a multiple stemmed Gum tree. This photo is of the original mallee from the sandplains throughout the Waggrakine, Moresby and Park Falls areas. They don't all have multiple stems initially but if damaged by fire or rabbits will reshoot with multiple trunks. Mallee roots are famous for their high quality firewood and artistic tabletops.

This species is a great looking small windbreak tree, with light coloured bark suitable for both urban and rural plantings. Two litre white bags unavailable today: $13.20 each.

Needing to find plants which will suit your needs? Our display tables group our plants by form and characteristics. We also produce our own labels that provide information specifically for our climate and soils.

Windbreaks for Geraldton – Fiery Bottlebrush

Fiery Bottlebrush (Callistemon pheoniceus) – Colourful Red flowering shrub. Great screening and windbreak shrub.

Windbreaks for Geraldton – Dongara Mallee

Drop in to our nursery for tubestock of sun hardened Dongara Mallees. These are great coastal windbreak and screening mallee trees that suit alkaline soil, that also grow well further inland.
