About Us

Located in Geraldton, in the Midwest of Western Australia we demonstrate the practical application of Permaculture and environmental conservation. We operate as a not-for-profit environmental organisation – The Drylands Foundation.

Our enterprises that fund our work in conservation and sustainability include:

  • Permaculture Nursery – locally grown plants suited to Geraldton and our Midwest
  • Garden Honey – harvested by hand from our own on-farm bee hives
  • Yilgarn Seeds – an endemic and heirloom seeds business for dryland climates.

We offer environmental education and sustainability training as Permaculture practitioners, and are hosts for ‘Willing Workers On Organic Farms’ (WWOOF) and HelpX.

Tours of our farm and volunteering opportunities are available for individuals and organisations interested in learning more about Permaculture and sustainability in drylands environments.

We are keeping this old Table Grape variety alive and in back into home gardens. The Black Wortley Hall originated in Yorkshire in 1819.

Spring garden is flourishing and at last we can make.. Stuffed vines leaves. In a couple of months the same plants will give us fresh organic table grapes..
Every year on the turn of the season we look out for and can't wait to harvest the young emerging leaves on our (previously deciduous) grape vines to make Dolmades. Stuffed Grape vine leaves.
It is perfect timing as all our other garden additives are also ready and waiting.. Mint, oregano, tomatoes, lemons and onion. Yum!
Two of our favourite " big fruited" table varieties that we grow on the farm and propagate in the nursery are "Black Wortley Hall" and the "Italia muscat".
I love the vigour of the Black Wortley Hall. Great tasting big fruit on a big strong vine with the odd soft edible seed, it does really well in the Geraldton climate. We prune off one third of the fruit in each bunch which increases the fruit size. It also allows air space between individual fruit which reduces mildews .
Come out to the nursery and we can show you how to train and prune these vines when they go deciduous.

Pity the shire has been intent on spreading it for the past seven or so years

Crown Beard. Its Geraldton's latest aggressive weed. Halt its spread into new areas. Learn to recognise it from our sunflowers. Tell others and weed that odd plant before it seeds. One plant can shed over 1000 seeds!

If you plough your firebreak, check the tractor and equipment are free of Crown beard seed. This is the best way to introduce this weed to your property.
We have kept this out of our area (1km each side of us for over the last ten years simply by weeding them out of the roadside gravel. Make a little bit of effort now and prevent a lot of effort later.

Share this around, show you neighbours and work together to keep this weed from spreading even further.

Is this the correct name for what we call "dongra daisy"???

Hi, I was under the impression that the sunflower is also a weed? It's not a native plant is it?

the shire should be cleaning up their verges and ensuring blocks are cleared of it. Just drive around Mt Tarcoola and Wandina. Cant keep it out of our yards if the seeds blow in from blocks and verges

Council have let it flourish and box thorn on east side of Whitehill Road where the old cottages were. Winter was the perfect time to spray?

its a nightmare been trying to get rid of the weed ever since i got here.

I've managed to get rid of it by hand pulling last 2 winters and when ever I see it ugly head.

We call it Dongara daisy and it's a shocker. Multiplies like wildfire.

Nasty lil weed. We have been working for yrs to get rid of it
